About Open Journals Hub
Open Journals Hub is an ambitious initiative led by The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Library to create a trusted, bilingual Open Access platform for publishing academic journals from China. We serve the mission of The university to assist in the preservation, creation, application and dissemination of knowledge by teaching, research and public service in a comprehensive range of disciplines, thereby serving the needs and enhancing the well-being of the citizens of Hong Kong, China as a whole, and the wider global community. By amplifying voices through Hong Kong, as a bridge between the Chinese Mainland and the rest of the world, we aim to connect regional scholarship with the world.
Why Open Journals Hub?
Open access publishing is transforming scholarly communication worldwide, allowing research to reach broader audiences and fostering collaboration across borders. While this movement has gained strong momentum in Europe and North America, East Asia still faces challenges in visibility and accessibility. Open Journals Hub seeks to bridge this gap by providing an inclusive, high-quality publishing platform tailored to the region’s academic strengths. This builds on the success of Open Books Hong Kong, launched in summer 2024 as a platform for Open Access monographs published by university presses in Hong Kong, with over 750,000 downloads since the scheme launched.
In September 2025, the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China announced that the Government would support local universities and professional organisations in their bids to host more international academic and professional conferences and publish influential academic journals.
Our Vision
Open Journal Hub is conceived as a trusted, multilingual platform where peer-reviewed scholarly journals can be published with no author fee and are freely available to global audiences. We aim to create an innovative publishing ecosystem that amplifies research in social sciences, arts, and humanities. We champion academic quality, global visibility, and true editorial independence. Through this platform, we hope to make scholarly knowledge accessible to everyone, everywhere.
The Diamond Open Access Journals Project
Launching in 2026, the project adopts a Diamond Open Access model ensuring that both authors and readers can publish and access content free of charge. This approach promotes knowledge sharing, academic inclusivity, and global visibility for peer-reviewed research. Organisations such as UNESCO and the European Union are promoting Diamond OA as a community-driven, non-commercial model of scholarly publishing. Under Diamond Open Access, publications are freely accessible online, with neither subscription fees for readers nor article processing charges (APCs) for authors.
